The Coast to Coast Walk was the brainchild of Alfred Wainwright, across three of England's Northern most National Parks. Going West to East, trekkers start at St Bees on Cumbria's west coast, the trail crosses the Lake District with its spectacular mountain scenery before crossing the Pennines and winding its way on through Swaledale in the Yorkshire Dales to Richmond. The contrast of the North Yorkshire Moors follows and the trail comes to an end after 190 miles at the east coast fishing village of Robin Hood's Bay. Typically Walkers complete the crossing 'Wainwrights 12 sections' in 12-15 days although this is completely open ended - dependent on fitness, time of year and preference.
Shorter days generally occur early in the tour, where the crossing of several high Lake District passes is required. Where daylight allows, the days get longer towards the end of the walk, with a suggested 24 miles between Richmond and Osmotherley being followed by a day of 21 miles over the Cleveland Hills and North Yorkshire Moors. We are partial but we think the spectacular Honister Pass and the idyllic lakeland valley of Borrowdale are highlights of the route. They contrast sharply with the heather-covered elevations of the North Yorkshire Moors towards the end of the route.
Whilst not as demanding as the Pennine Way, the early stages through the Lake district are testing. Thereafter, with often rough going underfoot, an undulating landscape and long days, a good standard of fitness, together with good equipment, is required if you wish to carry out the walk within the usual timescale.
The Glaramara Centre is ideally placed near Rosthwaite, which is traditionally the second night stop for the Coast to Coast Walk. So why not stay at The Glaramara Centre for a well earned rest! For further information and booking please contact us
Stage 1: St. Bees to Ennerdale - approx. 14 miles
The first three miles are along the red cliffs of St. Bees Head, a nature reserve for sea birds followed by farmland and a former coal mining area. The summit of Dent provides panoramic views before the descent to Ennerdale Bridge
Stage 2: Ennerdale Bridge to Seatoller - approx. 13 miles
There are little or no opportunities to buy lunch or refreshments on this demanding stretch, until you arrive at Glaramara, so it is advisable to take a packed lunch. There is a village grocery shop at Ennerdale Bridge which is open daily from 07.30 (from 08.00 on Sundays) - seasonal. At Loft Beck, good views of Ennerdale and Buttermere can be found. You may wish to pay a visit to Honister Slate Mine for a guided tour before dropping down to Glaramara.

Stage 3: Borrowdale (Glaramara, just before Rosthwaite) to Patterdale - approx 18.5 miles
After a good nights sleep at Glaramara, this stage is often divided in two with an overnight break at Grasmere. There is nowhere to buy food and drink en-route, so Glaramara is happy to provide a healthy packed lunch and refreshments. Highlights and stop off points on this stage include Greenup Edge (mile 32), Calf Crag and Far Easedale (mile 33.5), Grasmere (mile 38), Grisedale Tarn (mile 42) and, finally Patterdale (mile 46.5).

Whether you are staying at a hotel, guesthouse, pub or campsite, you should book in advance, especially during peak season. The location of Glaramara immediately adjacent to the route is an ideal place for rest and recuperation whether you have just scaled Honister Pass or if you or about to embark on it (rather than scaling a dry stone wall and crossing a stream directly from the track, we suggest that you take the road through Seatoller with Glaramara 200 yards on your left). We welcome walkers all year and we offer special deals during the winter months. You will note from other sections of our website, that the Centre offers very comfortable accommodation, great food, a welcoming pint in our bar and, depending upon the season, a lovely sun terrace with great views or a homely log fire.
