Multi Activities Snowdonia

Why not let Glaramara arrange a visit for you to North Wales. You will be based in the fine setting of Llanberris where you have a choice of superb outdoor activities during the day and comfortable accommodation in the evening.

DAYTIME: We are able to offer many of our usual Lake District activities, just in a different setting:

Guided walks

The area offers some of the best walking in the British Isles. Top of the list is usually Snowdon; the highest mountain in England & Wales, known as Yr Wyddfa in Welsh. Set in a dramatic landscape, there are many well-known ascents and we will ask for your preferences whilst assessing the most suitable route for the group, according to ability and the prevailing weather.

Other walks:

Moel Eilio: just behind Plas Coch is 2700 feet high and is a good half day walk. There is a wonderful panorama from the top, taking in

  • to the South: Snowdon and the Llyn peninsula (and Ireland if you are lucky)
  • to the West; Caernarfon & the castle
  • to the North; Anglesey with the Llanberis valley, Elidir Fawr, and the Glyderau in the East. A good half day activity.

To Rhyd Ddu via the old Pack-horse route. A lower level walk over half or a full day. Other, short walks include Padarn Lake and the Vivian Quarry Trail:

Rock Climbing:

Llanberis is the hub of Welsh climbing with a long history going back over 150 years. Within a short distance there are many crags and many types of rock to climb on including those for beginners.

Llanberis Pass, at the base of the Snowdon massif, boasts some excellent crags giving it a reputation as one of the finest
places for rock climbing in the UK; classic rock routes, multi-pitch trad climbing & single pitch routes. Names familiar to the rock climbing world include Dinas Cromlech, Dinas Mot, Cenotaph Corner, Cemetary Gates, Left Wall, Resurrection, Right Wall, Spiral Stairs, Flying Buttress, Sabre Cut, Cyrn Las Main Wall, Lubyanka, the Skull, Grochan and Wastad.

Whilst it may take you some time to tackle some of the well known and more severe climbs, we are able to offer you climbing at varying levels:

  • Beginners - a comprehensive introduction to the equipment and skills to ensure safety – Movement Skills, Tying in & Belaying
  • Intermediates – Route finding, Climbing Calls, Effective Belaying
  • Available over half a day to a full weekend – multi-pitch climbing, Leading, Advance Rope Techniques, Private Guiding

Abseiling:

The Llanberis Pass, in particular, offers great opportunities for abseiling as well as for rock climbing. Again, whether you are new to abseil or want to hone your existing skills, this is a fabulous setting to do it in. Sometimes combined with your climbing activity.

Ghyll Scramble:

You may have enjoyed the thrills and spills in one or two of our Lake District ghylls. Well, why not try a Snowdonia ghyll or gorge, as they call it. But be warned, Welsh water can be just as cold!

Mountain Biking:

Mountain biking continues to be one of the fastest growing outdoor sports and, in particular, Coed-Y-Brenin Forest is one of the worlds leading mountain bike centres. Try one of the longest downhill routes in the country over a range of mixed trails; wide forest trails and single tracks.

Snowdon is an option depending upon the time of year (there are restrictions on bikeuse) perhaps up the Llanberis path and descending via the Ryhd Ddu path. Other options include: Bwlch Maesgwm (Sometimes referred to as Telegraph pass) and for the less adventurous the short circular ride around LLanberis over the Old Clegir Road

Canoe/Kayak:

The canoe is an open boat usually paddled by 2 people with single bladed paddles. The kayak has an enclosed hull with a cockpits to sit in and a double bladed paddle is used. Canoes can be easier to handle and paddle than kayaks and so are a good introduction to paddle sports. Llanberis is situated on Llyn (Lake) Padarn, and its often calm waters are a great setting to learn about safety as well as learning the fundamental techniques required to manage a boat. As well as having a lot of fun, kayak and canoe beginner courses teach skills in the following areas – straight line, turning, steering and balancing, capsize drills, simulated rescues, towing and planning simple trips on lakes and slow-moving rivers.

For those with some paddling experience already, activities and courses can be adapted according to your requirements.

High Ropes - featuring the highest outdoor activity tower in the UK as well as tight rope walks, balance beams and a zip wire. One of the most popular, if slightly daring exercises is the ascent of a swaying pole from which you leap for a trapeze. The giant swing which takes you up towards the treetops is a great finale to the session. Exhilirating, challenging and memorable.

Additional activities:

If you want a change from the outdoor activities we have found three contrasting things to do in Llanberis and in nearby Caernarfon

Electric Mountain - Visitor Centre in Llanberis contains a gift shop and cafétour bus image and is the starting point for the tour of Dinorwig Power Station where you will learn about pumped storage hydro-electricity. The tour provides information on the history of Dinorwig, the technology used and how it is vital to the country’s electricity demands. Descending deep inside the ancient Elidir mountain’s labyrinth of tunnels, the tour gives you the opportunity to experience one of man’s greatest engineering achievements – the massive main inlet valve chamber (housing the six mighty units) and the world’s fastest response turbine-generators , housed in Europe’s largest man-made cave. You will be provided with some amazing statistics along the way.

Caernarfon Castle

is a medieval building from 1283 when King Edward I of England began replacing it with the current stone structure. The Edwardian town and castle acted as the administrative centre of north Wales and as a result the defences were built on a grand scale. During the English Civil War Caernarfon Castle was held by Royalists, and was besieged three times by Parliamentarian forces. This was the last time the castle was used in war. In 1911, Caernarfon Castle was used for the investiture of the Prince of Wales, and again in 1969. It is now a World Heritage Site. You can include a tour as part of your stay in LLanberis.

Go-Kart

Indoor karting continues to be of the fastest growing adrenaline sports in the world. In nearby Caernarfon this activity is ideal for both beginners as well as those with more experience. Under the expert supervision of trained staff you will be:

  • given a tour of the circuit, how to operate the kart and tuition and tips on how to get the best out of your vehicle
  • involved in a high adrenaline race whilst in a very controlled and safe environment. Ideal for families and groups who enjoy that competitive atmosphere.

EVENING:

Legacy Royal Victoria

You will be staying at the Legacy Royal Victoria, which is conveniently located and which offers en-suite facilities, a choice of restaurants as well as the potential to provide facilities for group organisers looking to hold a meeting or conduct a presentation perhaps as part of a Team Building Event.

Youth Hostel

Alternatively, is you are on a more modest budget, you can stay at the Llanberis Youth Hostel. There is a choice of rooms from 2 beds up to 8 beds together with family rooms. All the usual facilities you would expect from a modern hostel are provided.
