Via Ferrata

What is it?

Hugely popular in the Italian Dolomites and across Europe, Via Ferrata is Italian for "Iron Way" and the system has been used in the Alps for more than a century. During World War One, they were used to ferry troops and equipment over mountainous terrain.

While different from traditional rock climbing, the activity of Via Ferrata can give the participant the sensation of being exposed on a rock face as well as allowing access to areas not usually easily reached.  Unlike traditional rock climbing, a Via Ferrata participant is not attached to a belay but climbs independently using iron rungs, ladders and supports installed in the rock face. As such it is safer and requires less skill. The participant is firmly attached to a steel cable running the length of the route and as such it reduces the need to search for crannies in the rock face in which to wedge boots or fingers. It may be the perfect answer to conquering your fear of heights!

Where is it?

The Via Ferrata situated on Fleetwith Pike (2,126 feet high) overlooking Buttermere, just 2 miles from Glaramara, was constructed and is managed by Honister Slate Mine. In the Victorian era miners at Honister used a similar set up as an early and risky version to get home quickly after long dark day at work.

How can Glaramara help?

We are one of the few approved operators. Glaramara outdoor instructors are trained to take you on the Via Ferrata (our AALA license covers this activity for children).  Feedback from groups has been tremendous and it offers a truly unique experience which you will be talking about for months to follow.
