Our Policy

The Management of Admontes Limited (operating company of the Glaramara Centre) recognise their responsibility to manage the environmental impacts of its activities, products and services in relation to Borrowdale and beyond. In particular:

  1. To continue to identify the areas of significant environmental impacts of our activities and, in so doing, comply with relevant legislation and regulation
  2. (a) To prevent pollution, (b) reduce our use of utilities and resources (c) reduce emissions to the atmosphere (d) reduce effluents to waters/sewers (e) to increase waste re-use and recycling
  3. To set defined but achievable targets year on year, specifically, for energy and water saving and recycling.
  4. To continue to see every replacement/renewal of building materials, furnishings and equipment as an opportunity to introduce a more energy saving, sustainable and environmentally produced product.
  5. To concentrate upon the grounds of our Centre by developing a bio-diversity plan and acting upon it.
  6. To continue to ensure that environmental responsibilities are defined, communicated and understood at all levels within our organisation and provide appropriate training where needed.
  7. To ensure that suppliers and contractors are aware of and understand this Policy and assist them in developing appropriate systems and a responsible approach
  8. To continue to communicate, co-operate and respond to the views of interested parties, including visitors and the general public, on environmental issues
  9. To support appropriate local and national organisations relevant to our business; by way of membership, venue provision, sponsorship, promotion, advertising, money raising or other appropriate means
  10. To endeavour to seek further recognition by way of appropriate Award and Accreditation, both local and national.  Currently we are at Silver Award with Cumbria Business Environment Network (CBEN).

We welcome your ideas as well as your contributions in achieving our aims.

The Directors & Staff
Admontes Limited

Things we have done/achieved –

  1. The continuation of our recycling scheme and the education of visitors, both young and old, of its benefits.
  2. Continuing to educate our staff to understand the benefits of energy savings where feasible.
  3. With the aid of a loan from the Carbon Trust, the introduction of HouseHeat technology which communicates wirelessly between the room thermostats and automatic valve motors fitted to each radiator. This is in
place of traditional thermostatic or conventional radiator valves.
  4. Heating system, showers and sanitary ware upgrade in the main house
  5. Glaramara are grateful to have received assistance from the Woodland Trust and Bassenthwaite Reflections on a project to introduce native tree species to the Centre grounds. Those planted include Alder, Ash, Oak, Cherry, Rowan, Hazel and Thorn. See related news article
  6. Played host to an Environmental Seminar for local businesses – ‘You, your Guest and the Environment’
  7. Recognition from Cumbria Business Environment Network – Excellence Award

Some of our aims in 2010:

  1. increase waste recycling from around 40% to 50% of our total disposal
  2. to actively source local produce
  3. to reduce the significant environmental impact on the valley by encouraging staff and visitors to minimise their transport use
  4. to maintain Silver Award level within the CBEN scheme and, work towards, Gold status.

We are pleased to advise that we are a member of Nurture Lakeland and are investigating ways of contributing further to its many worthwhile projects.
