Project Skylaunch

Outline of Project Skylaunch

Project Skylaunch is an exercise designed to encourage maximum involvment and participation by delegates in a mixture of outdoor activities, problem solving exercises, planning, preparation, time management and communication skills. Delegates operate in teams to complete a project culminating in the launch of a self build rocket.

Event Format

Copies of the project brief are issued after breakfast and a briefing is provided  by your faciltators.  During the day you will be expected as a team to complete the following tasks:

  • Design and construct a base platform, a launch pad and a rigging system.

  • Earn points to purchase the constituent parts of the rocket.

  • Put together a five minute marketing presentation to include a logo, a slogan and an advertising jingle.

  • Complete a major outdoor task, which may include a gorge scramble, abseil or an orienteering circuit.

  • Participate in on site problem solving and initiative exercises.

  • Write a technical operations manual for the rocket and delivery system.

  • Deliver the marketing presentation.

  • Launch the rocket.

  • Conduct an internal review on lessons learned from the exercise which may be applicable to your workplace.

As always, timings will be tight and time management and allocation of resources will be fundamentally important to the success of the exercise. Cross fertilisation of ideas within the team will be positively encouraged, as the ultimate aim is for the team to succeed and to breed a culture of sharing information and best practice.

Summary

This is a fast moving exercise combining outdoor adventure, problem solving, planning, time and resource management and communication skills. It is also, more importantly, highly enjoyable. It allows all delegates to demonstrate their own particular skills in a wider team scenario. The launch of the rocket provides a fitting finale to celebrate the team’s achievement.
