Beech Hall Summer Camp
Beech Hall a regular at
the Glaramara Centre, had this report on their summer camp:
"The early morning sun beats down from a
beautiful blue sky illuminating the peak
of Glaramara opposite and
flooding the Centre with the promise of another superb day’s activities. The
children, as always have been magnificent and they are having a whale of a
time. They are all still sleeping soundly at the moment after their exertions
of yesterday. Some had their first experience of ghyll scrambling and warmed by
the centres ever glamorous ‘teddy bear suits’, they threw themselves quite
literally into the activity, scrambling up waterfalls, crawling through tunnels
and plunging into pools of chilly mountain water. Others spent the day up in
the hills enjoying the wonderful views on offer from the top of Castle Crag and
Glaramara itself. Today all of the children will canoe on Derwent Water in
ideal conditions, some will explore the hills and others will get their first
taste of the ghyll.
The children gain as much
from residential trips such as this. They have great fun being away and rooming
with their friends but they also learn a lot about the benefits of healthy,
safe exercise in the great outdoors and about themselves. I know of no activity
like outdoor pursuits for teaching children to be independent, resourceful and
appreciative of their surroundings. Already I have observed children, initially
timid, burst into the biggest smiles when they accomplish a task and seen them
swell with pride in their achievement as their confidence visibly grows."
