The Carr’s Lake District Travel Test

April 2007

Eight lucky mangers from the Carr’s biscuit plant in Carlisle were sent on a two day corporate team building event at Glaramara. The pressure was on as each participant had a facilitator watching their every move.

The overall aim of the event was for the team too:

‘Design an advertising campaign to promote the lengths that Carr’s were willing to go to, to deliver quality products to its customers

The team were given a brief explaining the event and some planning time on the Sunday evening. They quickly established that they needed to build two carriers to transport several cases of biscuits around the Lake District the next day. The carriers where needed to keep the biscuits off the ground at all times.

The next morning an early start was had by all, the weather played its part with beautiful sunshine all day. All the necessary building materials were provided for the making of the carriers, and the team showed great teamwork and craftsmanship by producing two excellent carriers.

The team were provided with 8 tasks throughout the day to show their competence and flexibility, plus providing opportunities for them to gather video and photographic footage for their campaign. They were given two mini buses to transport them and their facilitators around all the challenges. The challenges took place all around the lakes visiting Honister Slate Mine, Buttermere Valley, Lorton, Whinlatter Forest and Borrowdale with the group having to navigate the buses between tasks. Some tasks incorporated the whole team whilst others had them split into smaller teams. The team showed excellent planning, teamwork and good communication skills throughout the day which led to successful completion of all the tasks. After all the tasks had been completed the team returned to the Glaramara centre and were given time to prepare their presentation A good time was had by all.
