It is assumed that you will already have a certain level of ability before you embark on any of the qualification training schemes. The schemes are designed to identify and work on the additional skills required by leaders and instructors.
Stage 1
Contact the appropriate administrative body (MLTUK) to obtain a copy of the relevant syllabus for the qualification you intend to gain.
You must make sure that you meet the pre-requirements laid down for each award.
Stage 2
Register with a MLTUK for the appropriate qualification (you are encouraged to register with the home nation board of the country in which you reside). They will supply you with a log book and some guidance as to how you should best prepare yourself for the training and assessment process.
Stage 3
Attend a training course. Training is an integral part of all of the mountaineering qualifications. You must complete stages 1 & 2 before booking a place on a training course. The training course will concentrate on those areas of the syllabus which candidates find difficult to cover on their own and will include guidance as to what is required before assessment.
Stage 4
The assessment course. Candidates presenting themselves for assessment must have completed stages 1,2 & 3 and meet any other requirements laid down by MLTUK (eg hold an appropriate first aid qualification).
As an MLTE member, some of our courses are classed as 'Outdoor sports and pursuits qualifications' by the University of Cumbria. Those people who fit the criteria can seek partial funding of these courses by accessing www.cumbria.ac.uk and contacting Rachel Walker.

Mountain Leader Training UK: Mountain Leader Award (Summer)The mountains of the UK are remote, technical and exposed to harsh and unpredictable weather. This makes them a hazardous place for novice walkers. The Mountain Leader Award is designed to help responsible leaders who wish to work with others in mountainous terrain in summer conditions. ML courses develop your group management skills, the ability to navigate in all conditions, the ability to deal with mountain hazards (including steep ground) and increase your awareness of environmental issues. There is also an expedition element to this scheme.
Training
We offer these courses either as a six day block or over three weekends including full board and all specialist equipment. In order to attend a training course you must have logged at least twenty quality mountain days (full details on the MLTUK website).

Mountain Leader Training UK: Single Pitch Award This award enables holders to supervise people on single pitch crags and climbing walls. To gain this award you need more than just good personal climbing skills. You will need to learn how to manage a group safely, indoors and out, understand the rules of crag etiquette, and know your environmental and legal responsibilities. You must become an effective supervisor, encouraging others to enjoy their climbing safely, whilst also improving some of your own climbing skills.
Training
We offer these courses over a full weekend including 2 nights’ full board and all specialist equipment. In order to attend a training course you must have logged leads of at least fifteen traditionally protected rock climbs and have an interest in, and perhaps some experience of, supervising others (full details on the MLTUK website).
