Following the theme of previous historical posts – Glaramara through the decades – here is some personal experience of one lady from Stockport who spoke of of her “gap year‟ in 1951 spent working for CHA at Glaramara.
– it involved plenty of hard work for the Host & Hostess interspersed with lots of walking.
– there was no electricity past Grange and water was heated in a huge cook stove.
– guests were “expected” to be involved in activities and were given an “A”or “B” alternative which varied depending upon the time of the year.
– walks were led by the “Secretary” who , also, organised social events including Scottish, Cumbrian and Country Dancing.
– fresh food was delivered by the local bus
and, finally there was huge excitement if a guest turned up in a motor car….
