Something a bit different especially for those maritime enthusiasts amongst you.

From 1845 to 1857,  a number of vessels were built, in nearby Workington, for the Lamport and Hope Line including the Blencathra, Coniston and Glaramara.  The latter being a 478 tonne barque style boat. 

Further research reveals a 678 tonne cargo vessel named Glaramara built in nearby Whitehaven in 1877.   Sadly, following a voyage across the Atlantic carrying wheat, it sank off the Irish coast only 6 years later.  The good news is that the crew of 17 survived.
